Road condition scanning
Teconer - Stand 9050

Over 4,000,000km (2,485,000 miles) of road have now been scanned using Teconer’s RCM411 road condition monitor. The system can be installed on buses or other commercial vehicles, providing an ideal platform to collect accurate intelligence on road conditions and fill in data gaps left by fixed weather stations.

The RCM411 uses an optical sensor based on spectral analysis to measure optical reflection, and analyses the data to produce a report on road surface conditions and friction. It records winter road surface conditions, friction, water layer thickness, dew point and surface temperature, which are then displayed through a user-friendly dashboard that offers a map view – where roads are colour coded depending on the condition – and a graph view with numerical values along with the curves.

An interval of a few hours is adequate for keeping up with changes in road conditions, and the cost compares favourably with fixed stations. There is also the option of complementing the system with a camera, as photographs can provide useful additional information.
