VISIBILITY MEASUREMENT
Joanneum Research
VisCam from Joanneum Research is a new and innovative visibility measurement system for airports and other critical infrastructure. The system is currently being used and evaluated by ANSP Austro Control. The new camera system offers reliable and exact assessments of visibility that is essential for safe air traffic control. There are currently a number of drawbacks from using what can be subjective reports from human observers and very localized measurements of current systems. VisCam offers a new approach to automatically gain visibility measures of broader areas.
VisCam can be integrated into existing surveillance systems and works with off-the-shelf cameras, as is currently being used at Austro Control. With its automated evaluation of visibility and distance, VisCam reduces stress for air traffic controllers in critical situations and can be used to conduct plausibility checks of local visibility sensors.
With the help of distance maps, it gives visibility measures that can be reported in customized and standard formats.
