Baron to upgrade weather radar at Taoyuan International Airport

Weather intelligence provider Baron has been selected to upgrade the weather radar technology being used at Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan.

Baron will provide two 350,000W C-band magnetron transmitters and a new replacement antenna. The dual transmitters feature a hot-redundant back-up system, which provides an immediate switch-over function to ensure continuous operation. Baron is working on the project in partnership with communications firm Mitel Broadband.

Airport officials will use the Baron radar to monitor for inclement weather and typhoons, helping to protect passengers, facilities and freight. Typhoon monitoring is one of the airport’s major public safety concerns, having suffered recent disruptions due to super typhoon Nesat in July 2017 and Nepartak in July 2016. A super typhoon is equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin.

Bob Baron, executive vice president, Baron, said, “Baron is pleased to have been selected along with our partner Mitel Broadband to perform this upgrade, and we look forward to this solution serving Taoyuan Airport’s meteorological needs for another 15 years or more.” - June 2018
