Details revealed for the ECMWF’s new Italian HPC data center

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is to relocate its high-performance computing (HPC) data center from Reading, UK, to Bologna, Italy, in 2020 and details of the new Italian site are now available.

According to business technology news site ZDNet, ECMWF requires 10 times more computational capacity than is currently available, and there is not enough space in Reading to host the new processors. The company’s headquarters will remain in the UK.

The proposed site in Bologna, a former tobacco factory known as the Tecnopolo, will transform 97,000ft² of space to house supercomputers and offices for the new data center.

ECMWF’s supercomputers operate at more than 330 teraflops, with 25% used for operational forecasts and 50% for research. The other 25% is used by the ECMWF’s members.
